Netflix Unveils ‘Chastity High,’ Its First Japanese YA Series, with New Trailer

Apparently based on a true story about a Japanese school being sued by students for banning romance between students, Chastity High will be Netflix’s first Japanese teen series.

Premiering on August 29th, the series depicts a world where chaos ensues when a prestigious high school bans romance between students. Some students rebel against the rules, while others are confused by each other.

Produced by Robot Communications, the series follows two students, played by Mikami Ai (Yu Yu Hakusho,” “Undead Lovers”) and Miyase Ryubi (Lovesick Ellie,” “Kururi Who’s in Love with Me).

One is a so-called “Love Keeper” who uses her wits to secretly help other students who break the no-romance rule. She earns money to help a hardworking single mother pay for school. The other is the principal’s son, trying to escape his abusive father, and sees the Love Keepers mission as a means to earn the money he needs. Eventually, their partnership develops into a love affair that (of course) goes against the school rules.

Netflix claims the script contains extensive research into Gen Z’s views on romance, modern youth culture and their evolving attitudes towards love and relationships.

“Chastity High” joins other popular YA series produced in the APAC region, including South Korea’s “Hierarchy” and Australia’s “Heartbreak High,” which have made it into the streamer’s Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) list in 72 countries. It was recently renewed for a third and final season.
