Iginio Straffi, creator of the six teenage fairies from the hit TV series Winx Club, is launching a new animated series titled Mermaid Magic, which will be available worldwide on Netflix on August 22.
Mermaid Magic is created and produced by Strafi’s Italy-based Rainbow Studios and written by American head writers Rich Burns and Nancy Cohen, known for their work on DreamWorks Animation’s Spirit Riding Free, and showrunner Guy Barry, known for their work on Minions and Kung Fu Panda.
The computer-animated series is produced by Rainbow and its Canada-based VFX animation studio Bardel.
Mermaid Magic is set in the underwater world of Meltropia and follows the adventures of “warrior mermaids” Princess Merlinda and her irreplaceable friends Sasha and Nerissa as they emerge from the sea and embark on an epic journey to defeat evil pirates. As the synopsis states, the Battle of Barbarossa “who is draining the ocean’s magic.” “The series provides a dazzling blend of magic, action, humor, and emotion. It also shines a spotlight on crucial issues like ocean conservation,” promotional materials say.
“’Mermaid Magic’ combines extraordinary elements offering viewers original stories whose protagonists are mermaids, who have always been in the dreams of the collective imagination and who reach the public thanks to a great emotional characterisation,” said Straffi in the statement.
“To create a story of exceptional quality and with aspirational themes and values for our time, the studio has heavily invested in this new production,” the Rainbow chief continued. “For the first time, we will follow the adventures of real warrior sirens, ready to defend the seas thanks to the magic and strength of their friendship.”
