The Lord of the Rings: After a particularly prolonged period of incubation: Gollum is about to set sail. Daedalic has revealed that a Switch version of its stealth action take on JRR Tolkien’s fantasy world will be released later this year. It will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on May 25. Even though the game’s mechanics are already well-known, it still promises to be different if you weren’t a fan of Monolith’s Middle-earth hack-and-slash games.
In a previously unrecorded tale about Gollum’s search for (what else?) the Precious in The Fellowship of the Ring’s first few chapters. He’s plainly not a brawler, so he needs to sneak and move to get by. And most importantly, a significant role is played by the conflict that is going on within his twisted mind. You must decide whether to give in to Gollum’s darker impulses or to hold on to some of Smeagol’s kindness. Even though this is a new story based on the books, you’ll see familiar faces and explore a world heavily influenced by the Lord of the Rings films by Peter Jackson.
It would be an understatement to say that Gollum has taken a long time to complete. Even though it was initially revealed in 2019, it was not anticipated to arrive until 2021. After a delay that was only supposed to last “a few months” as Daedalic took additional time to polish the title, that year came and went (the pandemic did not help speed development), and even a tentative September 2022 release did not occur.
The timing could help the game out. Amazon’s Lord of the Rings television series was still in its infancy in 2019, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War) were out of date. It’s a different story now that we’ve moved on to 2023. The Rings of Power on Amazon is a huge hit, and movie effects company Weta Workshop is making a game based on the series. Gollum may stand to gain from the renewed interest in hobbits and orcs.
