As New Year’s Eve approaches, the northern skies of the United States could be illuminated with vibrant pink and red streaks, adding a natural spectacle to the celebrations, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Alongside fireworks, the aurora borealis, or northern lights, may make an appearance, offering a dazzling display of colors. This mesmerizing phenomenon could become visible as early as sunrise or after nightfall on New Year’s Eve, with another possible sighting after sundown on New Year’s Day, all thanks to a geomagnetic storm.
The stunning lights are caused by solar activity when coronal mass ejections from the sun release streams of energetic particles into space. These particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field, creating a disturbance known as a geomagnetic storm. When the storm is sufficiently strong, the aurora becomes visible, even in areas farther south than usual. At the height of its 11-year magnetic cycle, the sun is in its solar maximum phase, which increases the frequency of these occurrences and permits the northern lights to reach areas that are normally not exposed to this type of astronomical phenomenon.
This week’s geomagnetic activity may not be as powerful as past events but could still provide a breathtaking experience for those in the northern United States. Over recent months, similar displays have treated skywatchers to rare sights. In May, a solar storm lit up skies across the Northern Hemisphere, reaching as far south as the Midwest and parts of Europe. Another storm in October brought vivid pink auroras to places like New York City. While this week’s solar activity may cover fewer locations, it remains a dazzling opportunity for those in northern states to catch a glimpse.
The aurora is likely to be visible across areas such as Washington, Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and parts of New England. For the best views, seek dark locations away from city lights. Even if not visible to the naked eye, cameras can often capture the colors. With minimal interference from the moon’s phase, the auroras promise an unforgettable start to the new year.
