In the Pac-12 title game on Friday night, No. 3 Washington defeated No. 5 Oregon 34-31 to secure a place in the College Football Playoff. Michael Penix Jr. thrown for 319 yards and a touchdown, Dillon Johnson ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
Given that ten of the 12 teams will play in different conferences the following season, the match was likely the last Pac-12 finale. Out of the surviving teams, only Oregon State and Washington State will attempt to preserve something from the rich legacy of the conference.
In 2016, Washington (13-0) became the final Pac-12 team to qualify for the College Football Playoffs.
In the fourth quarter, the Huskies scored two touchdowns to take a 34-24 lead. The final score came from a late touchdown by Oregon (11-2), but the Ducks’ six-game winning streak came to an end when they were unable to recover the onside kick.
Jalen McMillan (nine receptions for 131 yards) and Rome Odunze (eight for 102 yards), the Biletnikoff finalist who was playing in his hometown again, were the two Washington receivers with more than 100 yards.
Bo Nix of Oregon ran for 69 yards and tossed for 239 yards with three touchdowns.
If this was the conference’s final title game, then Oregon and Washington delivered another high-scoring contest filled with big plays throughout. In Seattle, the Huskies won 36–33 in their regular-season game.
Before the Ducks could cut the deficit to 10 points with nine seconds remaining, Washington had taken a 20-3 lead.
Oregon’s second drive began with a 2-yard touchdown from tight end Terrance Ferguson to tie the score at three points. After that score, the team converted two fourth downs. Jordan James’ 6-yard touchdown run gave the Ducks a 24–20 lead with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter.
Washington scored on their next drive to gain a dominating lead, so the lead did not last long.
Both teams have faced off against one another twice and have both been ranked in the top 10. The first meeting for this season was the other event.
In the Pac-12 championship match, Oregon is down at 4-2 while Washington improved to 3-0.
