On December 20, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” a Disney+ series based on the same-titled book series, will also premiere concurrently on Hulu.
Hulu will only offer the first episode for streaming, but Disney+ will receive two episodes on the day of the release and then additional episodes every week after that. Furthermore, Episode 1 will only be available on Hulu until January 31.
Rick Riordan, co-creator of the series and author of “Percy Jackson,” made the announcement on Wednesday during the show’s red carpet premiere at the Met Museum in New York City.
After Rick Riordan released the first “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” novel in 2005, the series represents a long-awaited IP adaptation. The following three volumes in the series were never adapted by 20th Century Fox because of fan reaction over the adaptation of the two “Percy Jackson” films that were released in 2010 and 2013, which were based on modified versions of the books with little input from author Rick Riordan.
“After the movie experience, I basically wrote off Hollywood for a long, long time,” Riordan stated in a Variety cover story published in October. “I really didn’t want to have anything to do with the film industry. There were many years of me saying, ‘I don’t want to engage. I don’t want to think about other adaptations. I’m done.’ But when it started to become clear that something was going to happen with me or without me, I had a long talk with Becky, my wife. We said, ‘Well, if something’s going to happen, it’s probably best to give it one more shot.”
“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” recounts Walker Scobell’s (Percy Jackson) perilous journey. He must go across America to return Zeus’ (Lance Reddick) master bolt and put an end to a full-scale conflict by outwitting gods and outrunning devils. Percy’s quest to discover who he is meant to be and how to fit into a world where he feels out of place will bring him closer to his answers with the aid of his quest companions Grover (Aryan Simhadri) and Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries).
Along with Jonathan E. Steinberg, who co-showruns with Dan Shotz, Riordan devised the series. Along with Riordan’s spouse, Rebecca Riordan, the Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and D.J. Goldberg, Bert Salke, James Bobin, Jim Rowe, Monica Owusu-Breen, Anders Engström, and Jet Wilkinson, all three are executive producers.
