Fletcher Cox, a defensive tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles, has announced his 12-year NFL retirement.
Cox, 33, declared on Sunday morning on Instagram that he was putting up his cleats. In the message, the defensive tackle offered appreciation to the Eagles front office, staff, former teammates, Philadelphia supporters, and his family.
“After much reflection, I have made the decision to retire from the game of football,” he stated in a letter. “I gave everything I had to this team and to this city. I don’t know what’s next for me, but I do know that I’m forever grateful for my time here in Philadelphia and with the Eagles organization. Go Birds!”
Less than a week has passed since Eagles center Jason Kelce made his own retirement announcement at a press conference on Monday.
In the 2012 NFL Draft, Cox was selected by the Eagles with the 12th overall choice, out of Mississippi State. After playing for Philadelphia for his whole 12-year career, the defensive tackle won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017.
