Disney Pixar’s chief creative officer, Pete Docter, has confirmed that Buzz Lightyear and Woody will both appear in Toy Story 5.
In February of this year, the director revealed that the two main characters would return in the upcoming fifth installment.
In an interview, Docter discussed the difficulty of maintaining established IP while simultaneously introducing new characters. We have our share of sequels in the works. We’re doing a sequel to Inside Out, so you get to go back inside the mind of Joy and Sadness.
“We have another Toy Story, so Woody and Buzz are back. And we have a few other projects, but it’s always a balance.”
Woody’s return was in doubt ever since Toy Story 5 was announced. The character moves on from Bonnie and his friends Buzz, Jessie, and others in Toy Story 4 to live with Bo Peep.
Buzz’s voice actor, Tim Allen, previously stated that he would reprise the role in Toy Story 5. On Twitter, the actor wrote in February: “See ya soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And off we go to a number 5! To infinity and beyond!”
Although the actor has yet to confirm his participation, it is anticipated that Tom Hanks will reprise his role as Woody in the fifth installment.
Peter Sohn’s Elemental, Pixar’s most recent film, was released earlier this month. The Toy Story spin-off Lightyear, starring Chris Evans as the title character and set in a fictional alternate universe, was released by the studio last year.
Toy Story 5’s release date has not yet been announced.
