During New Zealand’s second encounter versus Bangladesh in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on Monday (February 24) at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rachin Ravindra made history by making a remarkable comeback from injuries and scoring a memorable century.

After suffering a freak injury while fielding in the first game of the tri-series in Lahore against the Men in Green earlier this month, he missed New Zealand’s remaining three games, including the tournament opener against Pakistan.

When Daryl Mitchell was unable to play because of illness, Rachin Ravindra took his position in the starting lineup. After the Black Caps’ run-chase got off to a disappointing start with Will Young and Kane Williamson departing for single-digit scores, the 25-year-old walked out to bat at number four.

Rachin’s strong 57-run partnership for the third wicket with Devon Conway got New Zealand back on track in the chase. The left-handed batsman and Tom Latham then shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 129 runs.

Latham hit 76-ball 55 to lay the stage for an incredible victory for the Black Caps, which will guarantee their place in the semi-finals versus India, while Ravindra was dismissed after hitting 112 in just 105 balls.

Rachin Ravindra Creates History

As the first player in history to score a century on his debut in both the Champions Trophy and the Cricket World Cup, Ravindra’s ton cemented his place in history. The young player made his debut in the premier ODI cricket event when he scored a century against England in the opening game of the 2023 World Cup at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Rachin is the only player to appear on both lists. In cricket history, 19 players have scored a century on their ODI World Cup debut, while 15 have done so on their first Champions Trophy participation.

In just 30 innings, Rachin achieved his fourth century in ODI cricket; all four of these centuries have occurred in ICC tournaments. During the 2023 Cricket World Cup, the star batter surpassed the three-figure mark against Pakistan in Bengaluru and Australia in Dharamshala, hitting three tons.

In ICC events, Rachin currently holds the record for most tons by a New Zealand player. Nathan Astle and Kane Williamson have previously each scored three tons.

After Shikhar Dhawan of India, Rajin is the second-fastest player in the history of the ICC competitions to reach four tons (11). At the age of 25, he has also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most tons in international tournaments.

Rachin broke the record for most runs by a tournament debutant with 578 runs in 10 innings during his amazing 2023 Cricket World Cup performance.
