Reports saying ‘Like’ reactions for status updates coming to Whatsapp

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is reportedly gearing up to introduce a new feature that will allow users to “like” status updates, offering a quick and simple way to show appreciation. This feature, which is similar to the story likes on Instagram, aims to make it easier for users to engage with content shared by their contacts.

According to reports from WABetaInfo, the feature is currently being tested by users in the public beta version of WhatsApp and has been in the works for some time. Users will soon be able to like a status update by tapping on a heart emoji icon located at the bottom left corner of the screen while viewing a status. Once a user likes a status, the person who posted the status will receive a notification informing them of the like, and users will be able to view who liked their statuses through the standard views list.

This new functionality offers a more streamlined way to connect with others without the need to start a full conversation. It is expected to become as popular as Instagram’s story likes, which have become a widely used method for interaction.

Crucially, these status likes will be kept separate from chat conversations, ensuring that important messages remain easily accessible and are not overshadowed by status interactions. Users can still respond to statuses in the traditional manner, with no changes to that existing feature.

The like reaction feature is being introduced with the latest WhatsApp beta update, version 2.24.17.21, which is now available on the Google Play Store. WABetaInfo anticipates that the feature will be rolled out to a broader audience in the coming weeks as the testing phase progresses.

Additionally, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to engage in real-time voice conversations with a chatbot, according to WABetaInfo. This enhancement is part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to expand the capabilities of its AI voice features.

The development of the Meta AI voice chat feature has been observed in the WhatsApp beta version 24.16.10.70 for iOS. This feature will allow users to choose from various default Meta AI voice options to assist with their queries. The voice chat mode will not activate automatically, giving users the flexibility to end the conversation whenever they wish. Users will also receive a notification confirming that Meta AI is no longer listening to their queries, as indicated by the privacy indicator on iOS, which shows when the microphone is active.

These upcoming features demonstrate WhatsApp’s continued commitment to enhancing user interaction and privacy while providing new ways to engage with both content and technology.
