DK Metcalf has released his hold and is undoubtedly grinning in Seattle.
According to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo, Metcalf and the Seahawks have reached an agreement on a three-year, $72 million extension with $58.2 million in guarantees.
The signing bonus for Metcalf is $30 million, the largest ever for a wide receiver, according to Garafolo.
Through 2025, when he will be only 27 and eligible for his third deal, the Seahawks have the 24-year-old Metcalf under contract. He will get $24 million a year, which puts him sixth in the NFL among wide receivers.
Despite the wide receiver’s and head coach Pete Carroll’s optimism that it would be resolved months ago, a Metcalf extension has been pending all offseason.
Despite being on time for training camp, Metcalf did not show up for the mandated minicamp and did not participate in practise on Wednesday. But he didn’t hold out for long.
Now that Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner are gone, Metcalf may rejoin a Seahawks team that urgently needs his field-shifting skills as Seattle enters a new era.
Metcalf, a freak of athleticism and size at 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, made his NFL debut in 2019 with 58 catches for 900 yards and seven scores. He participated in the 2020 Pro Bowl and has double-digit tds in each of his last two seasons. Metcalf was selected by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Since then, he has accumulated 216 receptions for 3,170 yards and 29 touchdowns.
His rookie contract was about to expire, therefore he was entitled for an extension and a sizable raise.
The quarterback duel between Geno Smith and Drew Lock will still determine who will be passing the ball to Metcalf in 2022, but the Seahawks have already guaranteed they’ll have one of the most talented young receivers in the league for years to come.
