September Event: Apple to Announce Google’s Gemini AI Deal?

Apple plans to announce a deal with Google to integrate Gemini AI into its devices this fall, possibly during the company’s iPhone launch event in September, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote in the latest issue of its Power On newsletter. A month ago, Apple announced during WWDC that it would bring ChatGPT to iPhones and other devices along with other artificial intelligence features.

Gurman noted that Apple is in talks with several AI companies, including Anthropic, but the deal with Google Gemini is expected to be announced first.

The integration will give Apple users more options for AI assistants, in addition to the previously announced ChatGPT and Apple’s own AI features.

Apple’s software chief Craig Federighi hinted at a possible partnership with Google shortly after the company’s latest keynote. However, Apple reportedly dropped the partnership with Meta due to concerns over the quality of its Llama chatbot.

The company’s proprietary AI system, Apple Intelligence, is expected to be released in beta this fall. It will initially be available only on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Gurman suggested that Apple may eventually make AI features subscription-only as part of a longer-term plan to monetize these features.

Meanwhile, Apple will benefit from partnerships with third-party AI services. The company will receive a cut of in-app purchases when users complete subscriptions for AI chatbots through its devices. The company also hopes that Apple Intelligence will help increase sales and encourage buyers to upgrade to new models.
