Sony Pictures Classics, in partnership with Stage 6 Films, has announced plans to release The Outrun in North American theaters on October 4.
The drama, directed by Nora Fingscheidt, stars Saoirse Ronan, Paapa Essiedu, Stephen Dillane and Saskia Reeves.
The film is based on Amy Liptrot’s bestselling memoir, co-written by Liptrot and Fingscheidt, and explores topics of addiction and recovery. The story follows 29-year-old Rona (Ronan), who returns to the Orkney Islands after a decade in London, as she comes out of sobriety and comes to terms with her past.
The film played at Sundance and Berlin, and Ronan’s performance won her the top prize for Best Actress at the Biarritz Nouvelles Vagues Festival.
The Outrun is presented by Stage 6 Films and produced by BBC Film, Screen Scotland and MBK Productions in association with Brock Media and Arcade Pictures. Weydemann Bros and Studiocanal are co-producers. The film is produced by Sarah Brocklehurst, Dominic Norris, Jack Lowden and Ronan.
The project marks a reunion between Sony Pictures Classics and Ronan, who starred in the 2018 film adaptation of ‘The Seagull’.
“‘The Outrun’ is a film that means the world to everyone involved and we are delighted to have found a home at Sony Pictures Classics as our North American partners. Their taste and experience are inspiring, and we are excited to embark on this journey together,” Fingscheidt, Brocklehurst, Norris, Lowden and Ronan said in a statement.
Sony Pictures Classics added: “‘The Outrun’ is a stunning movie, beautifully directed by Nora Fingscheidt with a career-best performance from Saoirse Ronan. It is a privilege to bring this accomplished and moving drama to audiences everywhere this fall.”
