Amazon Alexa was the first voice assistant, and many people believe it is the best. It powers several other smart speakers and displays as well as the company’s extensive Echo hardware line. Voice calling and messaging to existing phone numbers have been supported by the Alexa app for phones and Echo speakers for some time, albeit with some restrictions.
In 2020, Alexa began to support caller-side phone numbers, initially with AT&T and then with Verizon a year later. With the official rollout of the ability to link T-Mobile accounts with Alexa, the wireless carrier is finally joining the fold. This means that T-Mobile customers can make and receive calls on Alexa-powered smart speakers.
Technically, Alexa’s ability to make phone and landline calls began to roll out in 2017. However, it could only be used for ten phone numbers within North America. Additionally, Alexa could only take calls from other Alexa users; it was unable to take calls from regular phone numbers.
However, the partnerships with Alexa established by Verizon and AT&T allowed for the expansion of these capabilities, allowing customers to finally use their Echo speakers or Echo Shows to make and receive regular phone calls. This feature will now be available to millions more users as T-Mobile enters the fray.
The first tip that The Mobile Report (formerly The T-Mo Report) received contained a T-Mobile-sourced image that explains what Alexa does when called. The Alexa skills page for T-Mobile now features this image as well.
A support page for the feature appears to have been made available by the company around March 15. Additionally, user reviews from March 14 and 15 can be found on the Alexa Skills page for the feature, providing additional evidence as to when it may have been made available.
However, in order to use this feature, certain requirements must be met: You will need speakers that are compatible with Alexa, online accounts for both T-Mobile and Alexa, and a T-Mobile postpaid plan that is still in effect. Ineligible are Sprint customers who have not switched to T-Mobile.
If you meet these requirements, you can enable the feature by going to the Alexa app’s Settings page and selecting Communication under Alexa Preferences. After that, you ought to be able to locate T-Mobile in Accounts. To ensure that the account linking process is finished, make sure you follow the on-screen instructions.
It is undeniable that using a nearby Alexa smart speaker for phone calls is more convenient. Any ten-digit number can be used by customers to ask Alexa to call any of their logged contacts. Although not everyone will be interested in this feature, it is a useful addition to the assistant, which is now integrated into the majority of smart home devices, including soundbars, displays, and thermostats.
