According to Variety exclusively, Amazon MGM Studios is presently working on an early development of a television series based on the cult classic horror movie “Poltergeist.”
There isn’t a writer working on the project right now. Amblin Television’s executive producers will be Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. The original 1982 movie was produced by Amblin, and Steven Spielberg wrote the screenplay, produced, and came up with the idea. Other than the fact that the programme will take place in the same universe as the movie, no plot-related information are available at this time.
The Freeling family, who move into a new home only to find it infested with spirits, is the focus of the television series “Poltergeist.” The Freelings collaborate with a parapsychologist and a spiritual medium to release their young daughter and get away from the spirits after they kidnap her.
When it was first released, the first movie turned out to be a huge hit. With a reported budget of $10.7 million, it brought in almost $121 million globally. Additionally, it received nominations for three Academy Awards: best original music, best sound effects editing, and best visual effects.
There were two more in 1986 and 1988. The only actors who appeared in all three films were Zelda Rubinstein, who played medium Tangina Barrons, and Heather O’Rourke, who played Carol Anne Freeling. In 2015, an updated version of the first movie was released.
The second television programme to be set in the “Poltergeist” universe would be the result of the Amazon MGM Studios initiative, should it proceed. Before its fourth and final season aired on Sci-Fi Channel in 1999, “Poltergeist: The Legacy” aired on Showtime for three seasons. The programme tracked The Legacy, a global organisation that defended mankind from supernatural dangers.
Additionally, this is Amazon’s latest attempt to adapt well-known MGM IP after acquiring the illustrious company. The streaming division of the massive online retailer is already hard at work on new ventures inspired by franchises such as “Robocop,” “Legally Blonde,” “Barbershop,” and others. A series based on the book “Glossy” and the Glossier brand is in the works, in addition to a number of other projects. Variety recently exclusively reported that a series rooted in the world of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” at the studio had found its showrunner.
