Veteran Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20I cricket after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on June 29, beating South Africa by seven runs in the final.

Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India remained unbeaten throughout the 2024 T20 World Cup. In the group stage, the Men in Blue finished first in Group A. In the Super 8 round, Rohit-led team defeated all three opponents to qualify for the semi-finals.

In the semi-final, the Men in Blue avenged their defeat to England in the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval. Rohit’s team then defeated the Proteas in a thrilling grand final to become the first team to win an ICC T20I title unbeaten.

Rohit also became only the second Indian captain after the legendary MS Dhoni to win the ICC T20 World Cup trophy, thus ending India’s 11-year long ICC Cup drought.

The experienced opening batsman has excelled at an average of 32.05 and a strike rate of 140.89. Behind him is teammate Virat Kohli who has scored 4188 runs in 125 matches. Kohli also announced his retirement from T20Is after winning his first trophy at the T20 World Cup.

Rohit has batted 205 sixes in 151 innings, the highest figure by any T20I batsman. The 37-year-old is the only batsman to have hit more than 200 sixes in this format of the match.

Captain and 2024 T20 World Cup winner Rohit Sharma finished his T20I career with the most matches played in the shortest format.

The 37-year-old has played 159 matches, the most by any T20I cricketer so far. Behind him is Irishman Paul Stirling who has played 145 matches so far.

4. Most wins in Division (109)

The 37-year-old Rohit has won 109 of the 159 T20I matches he has played for India. The 2024 T20 World Cup-winning captain is also the first and only cricketer to have won more than 100 T20I matches so far.

Behind Rohit is former Pakistan player Shoaib Malik who has won 86 of the 124 matches he has played. Virat Kohli is third with 82 wins in the 125 T20I matches he has played.

During his legendary T20I career, Rohit Sharma has scored the most T20I centuries. He and Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell have each scored five centuries in the shortest format so far.

Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav has hit 400 hits in T20I cricket so far, placing him behind Rohit and Maxwell.
