The second fastest player in ODI cricket to reach 11,000 runs is Rohit Sharma

During India’s ICC Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 20, 2025, captain Rohit Sharma achieved a remarkable milestone in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The seasoned opener became the second-fastest batter in history to reach 11,000 ODI runs, a record previously set by Virat Kohli.

Rohit is now the fourth Indian and the 10th cricketer overall to achieve this feat in the 50-over format. The landmark moment came in the fourth over of India’s chase of 229 runs when Rohit played a stylish shot off Mustafizur Rahman, sending the ball over mid-on for a boundary. The Indian skipper reached this milestone in his 270th ODI, accomplishing it in just 261 innings-second only to Kohli, who had reached the same mark in 222 innings.

Following Kohli and Rohit on the list are legendary cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, who reached the milestone in 276 innings, Ricky Ponting in 286 innings, and Sourav Ganguly in 288 innings. Rohit has now surpassed several greats and is inching closer to Ganguly’s tally of 11,363 ODI runs. At the top of the all-time list remains Tendulkar, with an unmatched 18,246 runs in 463 ODIs.

Meanwhile, Kohli entered this match just 37 runs shy of reaching 14,000 ODI runs, a feat that only two other players-Tendulkar and former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara-have achieved. Sangakkara holds the second position with 14,234 runs in 404 matches.

Rohit, known for his aggressive batting style, is also a dominant six-hitter in ODIs. With 338 sixes to his name, he is only behind Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, who leads with 351. Across his illustrious career, Rohit boasts an impressive ODI average close to 50, with 32 centuries and 52 half-centuries.

India continues to dominate the elite list of players surpassing 10,000 ODI runs, with Rohit now joining the ranks of Rahul Dravid (10,889) and MS Dhoni (10,773). With six Indian players among the 15 cricketers who have achieved this milestone, India’s rich cricketing legacy remains firmly intact.
