A Minecraft Movie is dominating the box office and continues to break records in its second weekend. As reported by Variety, the adventure-action adaptation has raked in an impressive $80 million during its second weekend in theaters, maintaining its strong momentum since debuting.
According to data from Box Office Mojo, the film pulled in $20.5 million on April 11, followed by $34.4 million on April 12, and another $25.7 million on April 13. The movie, which features a star-studded cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge, has firmly held its position at the top of the charts since its April 4 premiere.
Even with a 50% drop from its groundbreaking opening of $162.7 million, the second-week performance is still considered exceptional for a film of this genre and size. With a domestic total of $281 million and global earnings reaching $550 million, A Minecraft Movie now stands as the highest-grossing film of the year so far. It has surpassed Captain America: Brave New World from Disney and Marvel, which has collected $199 million domestically and $410 million worldwide.
In its opening weekend, the film amassed $157 million in the U.S. alone and $301 million globally, setting a new record for the biggest debut of a video game-inspired movie. That title was previously held by 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The story follows four unlikely heroes who are transported into the blocky world of Overworld through a mysterious portal. To find their way back home, they must navigate the terrain and undertake a fantastical journey, guided by an unexpected ally – Steve, played by Jack Black.
Despite its massive popularity, the film has also sparked some chaotic moments in theaters. Earlier this month, cinemas issued advisories urging audiences to refrain from disruptive behavior after a viral trend emerged. Clips circulated on platforms like TikTok, showing fans loudly reacting to a particular scene where Black’s character utters the phrase “chicken jockey.” The moment – set in a boxing ring with a baby zombie riding a chicken, a rare in-game sight – had already gone viral before the film’s release and became a fan-favorite scene.
