Netflix wants to ensure that at least one game is available to each of its more than 230 million subscribers, so it has no intention of reducing its gaming ambitions anytime soon. Following the recent addition of Valiant Hearts, the company’s library of mobile games now contains 55 titles: Coming Home and Highwater, a spellbinding dystopian film. In 2023, Netflix plans to add approximately 40 more games throughout the year, so there will be a lot more to come.
A few of those games have been shown off by the company, including the reverse city-building game Terra Nil on March 28 and the puzzle game Paper Trail, in which you have to fold parts of the world to solve puzzles. Netflix has likewise figured out an agreement with Ubisoft for three selective games. The second one, which comes after Valiant Hearts: Mighty Quest: “Coming Home” will arrive on April 18th. The Rogue Palace In the same universe as The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, it is a roguelike. It is said to have enhanced gameplay, a more in-depth story, and an improved formula.
A sequel to Too Hot to Handle, one of Netflix’s most popular games to date, is also coming later this year: The popular reality show Too Hot to Handle serves as the basis for Love is a Game. Netflix claims that weekly content updates have kept players coming back, and it is working on a follow-up with developer Nanobit.
The Monument Valley series is coming to Netflix Games in the future. In 2024, Netflix subscribers will be able to watch Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 without having to pay anything extra.
Apple Arcade currently offers mobile puzzle game versions of the classics. According to a spokesperson for Netflix, the games should continue to be available on other services after the year 2019. Meanwhile, Ustwo, the company behind Desta from last year: As part of its Netflix deal, The Memories Between (also available on Netflix) has hinted that another Monument Valley game is on the way.
A game based on an unidentified Netflix IP is also on the way. The exclusive game, according to developer Super Evil Megacorp, will build on the studio’s expertise in team-based combat. This project will be explained in greater detail later this year. Leanne Loombe, Netflix’s vice-president of external games, recently stated to reporters that the game is a “transmedia play” and a “big bet” for the company.
Together, Netflix’s internal studios are working on 16 games and its partners are working on 70 games. The majority of the games developed by Netflix’s own teams are still in the very early stages, with the exception of Oxenfree II: Lost Signs is scheduled to show up not long from now. For the remainder of 2023, Netflix promises to release new games every month, including “indie darlings, award-winning hits, RPGs, narrative adventures [and] puzzle games.”
According to Loombe, since Netflix began providing games in 2021, the company has discovered that players are primarily drawn to three kinds of experiences: games that are well-known from other places, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Vengeance and Interminability; ones like Knittens and Solitaire, which encourage daily play; and video games based on its own movies and shows, such as Stranger Things.
I hope Netflix doesn’t solely concentrate on those areas given its plans to become a world-class game publisher. In any case, things are going well so far. My favorite game of 2022 was, for instance, Poinpy, a vertical platformer that does not neatly fit into any of those three categories.
Netflix has said it’s investigating cloud gaming, so you may ultimately get to play its library on PCs, brilliant televisions and even control center. However, mobile is the primary focus. The key to Netflix Games’ growth strategy will also be making sure that more people are aware that they can play great games as part of their subscription.
