Maruti Suzuki has recently reduced the prices of its popular hatchbacks, the Alto K10 and S-Presso, in response to a slowdown in sales that has affected not just Maruti but the broader automotive industry in India. Dealer inventories have been building up as the festive season begins, and the automaker is under pressure to move stock.
Despite the Alto K10 and S-Presso maintaining their popularity, their year-on-year sales have dropped by approximately 13%, mirroring the overall industry trend. To stimulate demand, Maruti Suzuki has made slight price adjustments. The top-end VXi trim of the Alto K10 now sees a reduction of ₹6,500, bringing its price range to between ₹3.99 lakh and ₹5.8 lakh. The S-Presso lineup also experiences a modest price drop of ₹2,000, with prices now ranging from ₹4.26 lakh to ₹5.95 lakh. However, it remains to be seen whether these small price cuts will significantly impact sales.
Both the Alto K10 and S-Presso are equipped with a 1-liter, 3-cylinder K-Series petrol engine, delivering 66 Bhp and 89 Nm of torque. They are available with optional petrol-CNG versions, catering to the fuel efficiency-conscious segment. While a 5-speed manual gearbox comes standard, both models also offer a 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) as an option. As two of Maruti Suzuki’s most affordable offerings, these cars are primarily targeted at first-time buyers and those who are price-sensitive.
The Alto K10 is ideal for individuals seeking an uncomplicated city car at a competitive price. Its lightweight design also makes it surprisingly agile on highways, with buyers from hilly regions favoring it for its compact dimensions and brisk acceleration. On the other hand, the S-Presso is perfect for those who appreciate the features of the Alto K10 but prefer a higher ground clearance and a more SUV-like stance. With 180 mm of ground clearance and a short 2,380 mm wheelbase, the S-Presso handles rough roads and mild off-road conditions with ease.
Maruti’s reputation for reliability shines through with both these models. They are built to provide years of trouble-free service, and their fuel efficiency is another strong selling point. The Alto K10 achieves an ARAI-certified mileage of 24.9 Kmpl, while the S-Presso goes a step further with 25.3 Kmpl.
In addition to their efficiency, both models have recently received safety upgrades, now offering ESP (Electronic Stability Program) as standard across all trims. This system, which works alongside existing features like ABS and EBD, enhances stability and helps prevent loss of control, particularly on slippery roads, ensuring a safer driving experience.
