On Thursday, WhatsApp started rolling out an upgrade for iPhone and Android users that includes “HD photos.” The ability to share images in high resolution and minimal compression, as the feature’s name suggests, was a feature that many WhatsApp users wanted.
WhatsApp now lets users send HD photos
Before, when a user sent in a photo through WhatsApp, the software automatically decreased the image’s resolution and compressed it to make the image file smaller, which used less data to transfer. Of course, this led to photographs of poor quality. Users will be able to submit images in higher resolution thanks to this upgrade.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, a “HD” button has been added to WhatsApp in its most recent version, which users can use when they are about to share a photograph. HD quality keeps the image’s original resolution of 3024 x 4032 pixels while Standard quality reduces iPhone photos to 960 x 1280 pixels.
“HD photos are clearer. Standard photos use less storage space and are faster to send,” a message in the app reads.
Even when sending an image with the HD option enabled, there is still some compression, although the process is significantly less severe than it was in the past. Anyone who receives an HD photo via WhatsApp will be able to tell by the “HD” label that is shown on it.
HD videos coming soon
In the upcoming weeks, all WhatsApp users should have access to the HD images function. Additionally, the company stated that it has been working on enabling consumers to send HD films soon. Make sure you have the most recent version of WhatsApp, which is available for free on the App Store, in order to enjoy these features.
