WhatsApp, the most popular instant messaging platform on Meta, is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to connect with others using usernames instead of phone numbers.
According to the latest update of the WABetaInfo report, the new feature aims to improve users’ privacy and simplify the process of connecting with other users on the platform.
Username feature is under development
The username feature is currently under development and has so far only been spotted on the WhatsApp Web client. The new feature is not yet available on other platforms, but the company plans to expand it in the future.
WABetaInfo also shared screenshots showing the “Choose username” toggle and a tab where users can enter their desired username.
How does the new feature work?
During the setup process, users can choose a unique username, if one is available. This username acts as the user’s unique ID on WhatsApp and allows them to connect with other users without sharing their phone number.
This privacy-focused approach allows users to interact with friends and contacts while maintaining their anonymity.
Benefits for business customers
The introduction of usernames will also benefit WhatsApp Business users. Business owners can create unique usernames that reflect their company’s brand identity and are separate from their phone number.
This feature will enable businesses to interact with their customers more professionally and safely by strengthening their brand presence on the platform.
Rigorous testing and improvements
The username creation feature is currently undergoing extensive testing and improvements to ensure a seamless and secure experience. WhatsApp is focused on delivering reliable and bug-free features and strives to meet the high standards of its user base.
Other Updates: Favorites Filter
In addition to the upcoming usernames feature, WhatsApp recently introduced a favorites filter for chats and calls. This new filter allows you to save your frequently used contacts for quick and easy access, streamlining your communication with important contacts.
With the introduction of usernames on the horizon, WhatsApp will continue to innovate and prioritize user privacy.
