With Massive 10-inch Display World’s First Tri-Fold Phone Unveiled by Tecno

Tecno unveiled its latest innovation, the Phantom Ultimate 2, a tri-fold smartphone concept, at the IFA Berlin event on Wednesday. As its name indicates, this device features a triple foldable display, made possible by a dual-hinge design. The Phantom Ultimate 2 serves as the successor to Tecno’s earlier concept, the Phantom Ultimate, which was a rollable smartphone introduced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona earlier this year. When folded, the Phantom Ultimate 2 presents a sleek candy bar form, but when unfolded, it expands into an impressive 10-inch inner display with minimal creasing.

Tecno has yet to announce when, or if, this innovative handset will be available for purchase.

Regarding its specifications, the Phantom Ultimate 2 boasts a 6.48-inch cover display and a substantial 10-inch LTPO OLED inner screen with a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels. The inner display features a 4:3 aspect ratio. Remarkably, according to Tecno, this is the first foldable device with Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI) supported. This technology allows the display driver and touch sensor to be combined into a single chip, streamlining the device’s internal architecture.

From an ergonomic perspective, the Phantom Ultimate 2 measures just 11mm in thickness, aligning it with other book-style foldable smartphones like the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which has a 10.5mm thickness. Despite its additional foldable screen, it remains thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which is 12.1mm thick when folded.

The device’s dual-hinge mechanism has been rigorously tested, enduring 300,000 folding and unfolding cycles. Additionally, the Phantom Ultimate 2 is equipped with an ultra-slim battery, measuring a mere 0.25mm in thickness.

While Tecno has showcased the Phantom Ultimate 2 as a concept device, the company has not confirmed whether it will enter production. Concept smartphones often serve to demonstrate a company’s technological capabilities and potential future developments. However, Tecno may soon face competition in this niche market, as another Chinese manufacturer, Huawei, is reportedly preparing to launch the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, with a debut expected in October.
