WrestleMania’s main event mystery was resolved on the evening that Paul “Triple H” Levesque announced the WWE will be completely redesigned.
The WWE WrestleMania XL Kickoff confirmed that The Rock would, in fact, challenge Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship. This news came after fans expressed disapproval of the notion of Rhodes replacing The Rock in the Championship fight.
To a mixed response, including some noticeable boos, The Rock joined World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins and Reigns on stage in Las Vegas. While Rock greeted the adoring viewers, the crowd chanted a mix of “We want Cody” and “Rocky sucks”.
Six days prior, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shocked Birmingham fans by confronting WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, possibly upending the presumptive WrestleMania plan. Cody Rhodes, the victor of the 2024 Royal Rumble, appears to have passed up the chance to challenge Reigns at WrestleMania.
Fans at the stadia reacted negatively to the apparent evolve on social media.
WWE appears to have veered away from that original plan, as Rhodes’ reference to Reigns and Rock’s blended ancestry led to Johnson slapping Rhodes on stage.
It remains to be seen how the company proceeds with the story from this point on.
On April 6 and 7, WrestleMania XL will be held in Philadelphia.
